Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their team lose just one of their last six Premier League matches to pull clear of the relegation zone.
Rafa Benitez’s men were just two points clear of the bottom three following their 3-1 loss at Manchester City back in January, but they have since then won two and drawn three of their succeeding six league games to put some distance between themselves and danger. The Magpies produced an exceptional performance to beat Manchester United at St James’ Park last month, and they made it back-to-back wins in the North East last time out by easing past Southampton 3-0, thus opening up a five-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone with just eight matches remaining.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can continue their fine run of form between now and the end of the season, and subsequently preserve their top-flight status.
Nonetheless, several of our resident Magpies supporters are already looking ahead to the summer window and who their side may look to sign were they to stay up, and many feel that Everton outcast Davy Klaassen could reignite his career by making the move to the North East.
Ultimately, it has been a very tricky season for the Netherlands international since his move to Goodison Park during the summer, with the midfielder managing just 14 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees, and just one in 2018.
And with the plethora of talent in the number ten role in the blue half of Merseyside, namely Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney, it was always going to be difficult for the 25-year-old to stake a claim if he didn’t make a good start to life at the club. And so it proved.
And with Sigurdsson slowly but surely growing into the role, and Rooney continuing to show his class, it’s not looking good for Klaassen’s long-term prospects at Goodison Park.
And that is why he must consider a move to Newcastle this summer.
Clearly, Everton didn’t shell out £23.6 million on a bad player. The Dutchman was outstanding for Ajax last season in netting 20 goals and laying on 12 assists for the club, so there is clearly an abundance of talent there – Napoli were linked with a loan move back in January to further underline his credentials.
Thus, a fresh start in English football may be what he needs come the summer, and if Newcastle are indeed to stay in the Premier League, they will be looking at signings, especially in the attacking third of the pitch, to take them to the next level under Benitez.
And one man who has come in for much criticism this season is Ayoze Perez, who has often featured in that role just behind the lone striker, but has managed just two goals and three assists in 28 league appearances this term.
Yes, the Spaniard does offer more to the team than those statistics suggest, but if Newcastle are to push on next season and climb the division, they need their number ten to be producing more direct contributions than just five.
And, as is evident from his time in the Netherlands, Klaassen has that ability in his locker – it may just take a new manager, fresh ideas, and ultimately a new start to get the best out of him.
Thus, the £16.2 million-rated Everton outcast (as per Transfermarkt) should seek to kick-start his career by making the move to Newcastle this summer.
