Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side move a giant step closer to Premier League safety courtesy of a 2-1 victory at Leicester City on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the 2016 league champions off the back of crucial wins over fellow relegation candidates Southampton and Huddersfield Town, results which moved them seven points clear of danger ahead of Saturday’s game. And the Magpies increased that gap to ten points at the weekend as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez clinched victory at the King Power Stadium, although Claude Puel’s side did give them something to think about late on as Jamie Vardy netted, but it was ultimately in vain for the Midlands outfit.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are supremely confident that their team will indeed avoid the drop this term, what with their side tenth and ten points clear of the bottom three with just six games to go.
As such, some of our resident Magpies supporters are already looking ahead to the summer and what business their side may seek to conduct, with many of the opinion that £6.75 million-rated Arsenal outcast Lucas Perez (as per Transfermarkt) would be an ideal addition to the Newcastle squad.
Ultimately, the 29-year-old has endured a testing time at the Emirates Stadium following his arrival in the summer of 2016, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to former club Deportivo at the start of this season.
And that all came about after a tough debut season in the Premier League, with the Spaniard earning just 11 league appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side last term, in which time he managed just one goal.
And with further attacking reinforcements over the summer in Alexandre Lacazette, as well as the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January, it doesn’t look as though Perez has much of a future at the Emirates Stadium.
Yet he could be an ideal addition at Newcastle, who will be looking to move to the next level next season, but certainly need to strengthen in the final third of the pitch to do so.
Yes, Perez’s Premier League record leaves a lot to be desired, but there were flashes of quality for the Gunners last season, including a hat-trick in the Champions League against Basel, as well as a wonderful strike against Bournemouth in the league – clearly, he is a talented player.
And with Benitez’s men struggling for goals this term, having netted just 33 in their 32 Premier League matches, another option in the attacking third of the pitch, not least someone who can occupy different positions across the front line, certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
As such, the Arsenal forward should seriously consider reigniting his career at upwardly-moving Newcastle this summer, in what would be an ideal addition to Benitez’s squad ahead of the 2018/19 season.
