Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side’s four-match winning streak in the Premier League come to an end courtesy of a 1-0 loss at Everton on Monday night.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Toffees having beaten Arsenal, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Southampton in their preceding four league games, a run which saw them breach the 40-point mark and indeed all but secure their place in the top-flight next season. Yet they were unable to record a fifth straight victory on Monday night, with Theo Walcott’s strike six minutes into the second half sealing a narrow success for Sam Allardyce’s side, thus keeping Newcastle tenth in the Premier League table.
Consequently, there have been several frustrated Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are hoping their side can finish the season strongly and thus build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham flop Fernando Llorente could seek to leave the club this summer.
And given his impressive efforts for Swansea City in recent times, several of our resident Magpies fans believe that the £7.2 million-rated striker (as per Transfermarkt) should seek to resurrect his Premier League career by moving to the North East this summer.
Ultimately, the 33-year-old has failed to make a meaningful impact at Spurs since his move there last summer, with just 15 Premier League appearances and only one goal to show for his efforts this term.
And with just a handful of goals in other competitions, it’s clear that the Spaniard has found things difficult at the North London club, and simply hasn’t proven to be good enough to deputise for number one striker Harry Kane were he to get injured or suspended.
As such, his career under Mauricio Pochettino looks to be heading to an end, and Benitez’s Newcastle could be the ideal place for him to keep his top-flight career going.
The Magpies have done brilliantly to avoid the drop this season, but it’s clear that if they want to move to the next level under the former Chelsea boss next season, they need to bolster their attacking ranks given they’ve scored just 35 goals in 34 Premier League matches this term.
And while Llorente has struggled this season, one mustn’t forget the impact he had at Swansea in the 2016/17 campaign, with the 33-year-old scoring 15 goals in just 33 games for the South Wales outfit to help keep them in the Premier League.
And with attacking talent in Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey, and possibly even Kenedy, all of whom tricky and possessing ability from the wide areas, the Spain international could reap the rewards in the penalty box, much like he did in striking up a partnership with Gylfi Sigurdsson at Swansea last year.
Ultimately, for Newcastle to move forward under Benitez, they need strikers that will put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis, while also possessing the all round ability to lead from the front – Llorente could be that man.
And with his Tottenham spell seemingly coming to an end, the 33-year-old should seek to resurrect his Premier League career with a move to St James’ Park this summer.
