Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their team lose just one of their last six Premier League matches to put some distance between themselves and the bottom three.
Rafa Benitez’s men were just two points clear of danger back in January following their 3-1 loss to champions-elect Manchester City, but they have since then won two and drawn three of their six games to move up to 13th place in the division. The Magpies produced an outstanding display to get the better of Manchester United at St James’ Park last month, and they then made it back-to-back wins in the North East last time out by cruising past fellow strugglers Southampton, in turn opening up a five-point gap over the Saints who currently occupy the final relegation spot.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can continue their fine recent run of form between now and the end of the season, and thus secure their top-flight status.
Yet some are already thinking ahead to the summer transfer window and what business their team may seek to complete, with many feeling that Tottenham outcast Vincent Janssen, who is reportedly unlikely to seal a permanent deal to Fenerbahce, should kick-start his career with a move to their club.
Ultimately, the young Netherlands international struggled in his first season in English football last time out, mustering just two Premier League goals for Spurs in 27 appearances last term, one of which coming from the penalty spot.
As such, he was shipped out on loan by manager Mauricio Pochettino back in August of this year to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, but reports recently suggest that they will not seek a permanent move for the 23-year-old, who has made just 12 appearances so far this term.
Subsequently, the future looks pretty bleak for Janssen unless he makes a move this summer, and Newcastle could be the perfect place to get his career going again given their need for more attacking reinforcements.
Clearly, there just aren’t enough goals in Benitez’s side at present, with the top-scorer currently Dwight Gayle with just five goals, ahead of fellow striker Joselu with only four – that’s simply not going to get the job done.
And with Islam Slimani having yet to feature since his loan move from Leicester City in January, and Aleksandar Mitrovic so far out of favour he is at Fulham, it’s evident that they will need to add to those striking ranks in the summer.
And Janssen could be the man to bolster that department.
Remember, the 23-year-old is a Netherlands international and scored an impressive 31 goals in just 49 games for AZ prior to his move to Tottenham, and based on Fernando Llorente’s struggles at Spurs this term as well, it’s clearly not easy playing second fiddle to Harry Kane.
However, the Dutchman would likely be the main man at Newcastle and as such could well re-discover his best goal-scoring form – the sort of form which could propel Benitez’s side up the division next time round.
Thus, the £9 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) should seriously consider kick-starting his career with a move to Newcastle during the close season.
