When Florian Thauvin arrived at Newcastle United from Marseille for £16.52 million back in 2015, perhaps a lot was expected from him. A man who played off both flanks, Thauvin scored five goals and provided seven assists in 36 Ligue 1 appearances in the 2014/15 season before making his move to the Tyneside club, according to Transfermarkt.
However, the 27-year old did not make the best of impressions upon arrival at St. James’ Park, and this is exemplified by the reaction of Magpies legend Alan Shearer. The Premier League’s record goal scorer said that it was ‘not funny anymore’ as Thauvin opted to arrive to a home game against Watford dressed in a full tuxedo, as per ChronicleLive. To make matters worse, the Toon lost that match 2-1 as they got off to a dreadful start in the 2015/16 campaign.
Thauvin’s market value dropped shortly after that match, from £12.6 million down to just £8.1 million by the end of the term. He was consequently sent back to France midway through the season, having managed only one strike and two assists in 16 appearances in all competitions (via Transfermarkt).
Another loan spell would follow before NUFC decided that they had had enough, selling him back to Marseille for £9.9 million in 2017, less than what they paid for him.
Unfortunately for Newcastle supporters, it took the French international a move away from the club to start showcasing his talent again. In the campaign after he moved, Thauvin netted 26 times and made 17 assists in 54 games in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.
His market value started to rise as a result, and reached a peak of £45 million before eventually dropping down to £28.8 million, which is still relatively high. Thauvin has been limited to just two matches this term because of injuries, and will be hoping to return to playing as soon as possible.
Nevertheless, the Frenchman did not showcase his talent at United, which may remain a mystery to this day.
