Newcastle United supporters have been pretty flat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team go down 1-0 at home to West Brom in the Premier League last weekend, thus suffering a second successive defeat.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the division’s bottom side off the back of losing 1-0 at Everton in their preceding league encounter, a result which brought to an end their four-match winning streak. And the North East heavyweights were unable to get back to winning ways at St James’ Park on Saturday as a Matt Phillips strike in the first half was enough to clinch all three points for the Baggies, thus just about keeping them in with a chance of staving off relegation this term.
Consequently, there have been many disappointed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can bounce back when they travel to Watford this weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham are eyeing a summer move for Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand.
And while the Magpies have also been linked with the 28-year-old, these recent reports may well be well received by Benitez’s side, as it could open the door for them to move for Manchester United’s £13.5 million-rated star Luke Shaw (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 22-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move to Tottenham in a bid to reunite with manager Mauricio Pochettino, what with the duo working together to great effect at Southampton back in 2013 and 2014.
And with Danny Rose seemingly set to leave the North London club this summer, possibly to United no less, it looked for all the world that a deal involving the two left backs would take place this summer.
However, recent reports that Spurs are eyeing up Bertrand during the close season would suggest that a deal to bring Shaw to Tottenham isn’t likely to happen, as it’d be a surprise for Pochettino to seek two Premier League quality left backs this summer.
Thus, Newcastle simply must seek to take advantage by luring the England international to St James’ Park this summer.
They themselves have been linked with the United outcast this term such have been his struggles for regular football under Jose Mourinho, and while Paul Dummett has performed well in the left back role since his return from injury in December, there is no doubt that Shaw is more talented and has more potential than his compatriot.
Yes, things haven’t worked out for Shaw since his move to Old Trafford, but there’s a reason he was being tipped by many to be England’s next long-term left back a matter of years ago, and indeed why United spent a staggering £30 million on him back in 2014.
And it appears that, given the odd flashes of brilliance at United, the 22-year-old needs regular football and backing to get his confidence up to produce his best once again, and Benitez may well be able to do just that were he to move to the North East.
And recent reports linking Spurs with Bertrand may well have left the door open for Newcastle to reignite their interest in Shaw, and thus try to lure him to St James’ Park this summer.
