After two losses on the bounce heading into the international break dampened their collective mood, the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern were rather down in the dumps. As you can imagine, the punters propping up the bar were eager to see something to cheer them up.
Well, they sure have of late.
Some of our more eagle-eyed Geordie drinkers managed to spot reports emanating out of Spain that suggested Mikel Merino had returned to what appears to be light training back in his home county. The 21-year-old midfielder has been a revelation on Tyneside since his arrival over the course of the summer, though has missed the last few games with a mysterious back injury.

However, as revealed by Cad En Sar, the former Borussia Dortmund man was back at another of his former clubs, Osasuna, using their facilities at the training ground as he ramps up his return to first-team football, reportedly preparing to Newcastle on Friday.
As you can imagine – considering his immense popularity – this news really has gone down very well.
What a boost for Newcastle. Merino’s dynamic presence in the middle of the park makes such a difference to Rafa Benitez’s side, who’ve really missed him of late.
