Having managed to avoid an FA Cup upset, the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are absolutely delighted. Not overly used to progression into the 4th round in recent years, our resident Geordies are still toasting their Saturday win at St. James’ Park.
Indeed, with their Premier League form having picked up of late too, life is good amongst our punters clad in black and white. Well, as good as they can be under Mike Ashley during a transfer window, anyway.
Though Rafa Benitez has ensured his side have ended the frantic festive with some breathing space between their 13th position and the relegation scrap, few would doubt the fact that the Magpies need some January signings.
Still, worryingly, reports from the Daily Mail have suggested Benitez isn’t holding out all too much hope on the recruitment front. In fact, the Spaniard is believed to be expecting to land players only on loan as a result of the stalling takeover behind the scenes on Tyneside.
Desperate for recruits, it seems the former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach will once again be forced to work on a budget in order to keep his side in the Premier League.
Mike Ashley just can’t leave quick enough. It’s absolutely imperative that Newcastle stay in the league, so you’d think he’d be looking to back his man to the hilt. However, if he’s only going to be able to sign players on loan, Benitez needs to rely on every contact he possibly has in Europe to get the best.
