According to the Daily Mirror, Steve Bruce is interested in bringing Manchester United defender Phil Jones to Newcastle United this summer.
The 28-year-old has been a peripheral figure under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, starting just the two league games, and has a declining market valuation on Transfermarkt. As per the German website, Jones is now worth just £8.1m, which is around £10m less than his June 2019 valuation.
Given his lack of appearances this term, it is easy to see why his valuation has gone down and it now looks like Bruce will try take advantage of the situation.
A move to Newcastle, though, could see Jones’ valuation drop further, with the England international likely to face a real battle to get into the Magpies’ starting XI. In Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles, for example, Bruce already has a couple of really good centre-backs at his disposal.
How much is Phil Jones worth?
£10m or more
Less than £10m
Bruce, of course, has often gone with three central defenders in the current campaign, so Jones may actually see a pathway into the team. But as well as Lascelles and Schar, he would also have to do battle with the likes of Federico Fernandes and Ciaran Clark .
A lot could happen before then, departures, for example. But as things stand, a transfer to Newcastle may not be the wisest of moves for Jones.
