Life as a Newcastle United player has been difficult for Brazilian striker Joelinton.
He arrived from Hoffenheim last summer for a huge £40m fee but has simply failed to live up to expectations. In 29 Premier League appearances, the 23-year-old has scored just one goal, coming all the way back in August against Tottenham.
That has understandably had an impact on his market valuation, which has gone from £31.5m (June 2019) to £22.5m, according to Transfermarkt. At his young age, he still has plenty of time to turn things around. But as things stand, the signs are not looking good for the Magpies.
It was only last month when Steve Bruce admitted that Joelinton is not a No.9 who scores goals but rather one who likes to get others involved.
“The great strikers, the goalscorers, all they’re interested in is scoring a goal – Joe is not like that,” the Newcastle boss was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. “He certainly hasn’t got that mentality. He is more a team player.”
How much is Joelinton worth?
£20m or more
Less than £20m
Taking a look at more of his stats from this season, Bruce’s assessment seems an accurate one. For example, according to WhoScored, Joelinton is only taking the fifth-most shots per league game in Newcastle’s squad despite being the team’s frontman.
Averaging 1.4 shots per league game, he ranks below Matt Ritchie (1.5), Miguel Almiron (1.5), Allan Saint-Maximin (1.7) and Jonjo Shelvey (1.8), a worrying sign given the fact that the quartet are all midfielders.
Following the departures of Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez, centre-forward quickly became a problem position for Newcastle, hence the signing of Joelinton. However, the ex-Hoffenheim man, whose market valuation continues to fall, has not solved the issue.
