Here in the Transfer Tavern, everyone seems to know that Newcastle United is a special club. Indeed, such a status isn’t always a positive thing, with the Toon Army so often falling into crisis, a state in which they are fully entrenched now.
Having lost seven of the last eight, the Magpies here in the Tavern are depressed to see their side drop into the bottom three for the first time in a while. With that in mind, some of the punters propping up our bar were starting to wonder whether Rafa Benitez is under pressure at all.
With manager previously finding life on Tyneside tough, reports from the Daily Mirror shed some interesting light on the matter. They claim that the 57-year-old still retains the support of those behind the scenes at St. James’ Park despite the recent run of games and is reportedly key to any potential takeover.
A coach of such stature is believed to add tens of millions to the club’s value and, interestingly enough, the report also hints at a potential big budget for the former Real Madrid coach. Indeed, a kitty of around £40m is hinted at, much to the delight of the Newcastle fans in our bar.
Though Benitez isn’t enjoying the best time of things right now, few would doubt the fact that he’s simply the best Newcastle United could get. If backed properly, he could build something special on Tyneside, though he needs money to keep the club up.
