Rafael Benitez is desperate to sign a striker or two before the transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle fans will be glad to finally see a new face arrive at St. James Park. Eager to strengthen his defence, Benitez landed Deportiva la Coruna defender, Fabian Schar, following their relegation to La Liga. The Swiss international will add much-needed steel to the Magpie’s backline.

With the defence sorted, Benitez simply must prioritise signing a new striker. The Magpies struggled for goals last year despite their tenth-place finish in the Premier League. If the Spaniard can land a regular goalscorer, Newcastle are capable of finishing in a European place. West Brom’s Salomon Rondon has been linked with a move to Tyneside.

Instead, Newcastle should turn their attention to Bayer Leverkusen forward – Kevin Volland. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the Germany international enjoyed a stellar season in the Bundesliga, hitting 14 goals in 31 appearances for Leverkusen. Volland also notched two assists for his team-mates.

The 25-year-old was used primarily as a striker but is also comfortable on the right wing or as a number ten. He is a quick, strong forward who would have no trouble adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. His link-up play could prove crucial to any success Newcastle have next year.

Signing Volland would give Newcastle fans the goalscorer they have been crying out for. With a deal for Yoshinori Muto agreed already, Volland would be a wonderful second striker from the Bundesliga.

Newcastle fans, thoughts?
