Newcastle United are still well in the hunt for the Championship title this season, but they’ll have been annoyed by Brighton reeling them in.
Indeed, as things stand the Seagulls are two points clear of the Magpies, in the race for promotion to the Premier League, with a game in hand so work needs to be done.
Work is not something Rafa Benitez is shy of – he wouldn’t have taken the job if he was – but he does need to start delving into the transfer market this month and one man should be his prime target – Callum Wilson.
Newcastle have scored more goals than anyone else in the league, though, why should they need another striker? I hear you ask.
Well, Dwight Gayle has of course been superb with 19 goals but the club’s second top scorers are Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran with just four and, for a team going for the league, that’s not enough.
If Gayle goes off the boil or picks up a lengthy injury the club could be in great trouble and so that’s why bringing Wilson in has to be done – even if it means smashing the club’s transfer record as Chronicle Live are suggesting.
He may not have had the best season for Bournemouth so far but he is a proven goal-scorer at both Championship and Premier League level and has similarities to Gayle.
Both need a run in a side to get firing and once they do they’re very hard to stop so if Benitez can wrangle a way to get both in his team surely the momentum will swing back towards the north east in the title race this season.
