Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last couple of days to look back at their side’s ultimately successful season to date, and indeed to what their club need to do to strengthen in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Rafa Benitez’s men went on a four-match winning streak between March and April to secure their top-flight status, a fine achievement given that they only won promotion from the Championship 12 months ago. And having spent very little in the last few transfer windows, and only bringing in three loan signings during the January market, our resident Magpies supporters are particularly grateful to Benitez for building a solid and resolute side capable of picking up results over the course of the campaign.
However, those Newcastle fans lining up at the bar are well aware that further reinforcements will indeed be needed over the summer if they are to move to the next level next time round, and West Brom’s recent relegation to the Championship has been of intrigue to many of our resident Magpies fans.
And that’s because many feel that, with the Baggies now officially down, their team should seek to lure £10.8 million-rated Nacer Chadli (as per Transfermarkt) to the North East this summer.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has missed the vast majority of this season with injury, with just four Premier League appearances to show for his efforts so far, two of which came back in October.
And having cost the club £13 million back in 2016, and having performed well enough to earn 119 appearances for Tottenham between 2013 and 2016, the Belgium international is unlikely going to be satisfied playing in the Championship.
And with an impressive five goals and five assists in 31 appearances for the Baggies last term, it’s clear that the winger has immense pedigree in the Premier League when fit – who knows where West Brom would be were he injury-free this time round.
And in a Newcastle team that have struggled in the attacking third of the pitch this season, Chadli could flourish.
The addition of Kenedy during the January window played a key part in transforming the Magpies’ fortunes in the second half of the season, with the Brazil international adding much needed spark and creativity to the forward ranks to help them avoid the drop.
And with similar ability and credentials, Chadli could do something very similar. Add in the uncertainty surrounding a possibility of a permanent deal for Kenedy, what with big clubs circling, and Benitez may well be interested in bringing in another winger to his squad.
Christian Atsu started the season strongly but has faded as the campaign has gone on, albeit injuries have played a part in that, while summer signing Jacob Murphy hasn’t really shown enough to suggest that he could command regular football every week.
Thus, especially were a Kenedy deal fail to materialise, alongside news that West Brom are indeed going down, Newcastle simply must seek to lure Chadli away from the Hawthorns during the close season.
