The Toon Army here in the Tavern are cooing over the performances of Mikel Merino so far this season.
The 21-year-old Spaniard has wasted no time making an impression in the Premier League and his recent good form continued at international level last night, with a goal and an assist for Spain Under-21s.
Merino opened the scoring in Slovakia for the dominant Spanish side after 26 minutes, with a devastating finish that crashed into the roof of the net with his weaker right foot.
Although he is yet to get on the scoresheet for Newcastle United, a string of impressive performances in central midfield have made him a fan-favourite amongst the Toon faithful during the early period of a year-long loan spell from Borussia Dortmund.
Typically a period of adjustment is required for foreign players to settle into the Premier League, but Merino’s ability to quickly adapt to his new environment suggests Newcastle should do everything they can to turn his loan move permanent next summer.
Dortmund have already confirmed there will be an option to buy, should Merino appear in enough competitive fixtures for the Magpies.
Here’s what the Newcastle faithful think of Merino so far…
Nice Wednesday morning thought for everyone, Rafa Benitez replaced Jack Colback with Mikel Merino. Enjoy your day x
