Newcastle want Antonio Valencia

Newcastle United could be about to land a hugely experienced defender as the transfer window enters its final week.

According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia could be available this January.

It is being claimed the Ecuador international right-back may be allowed to leave on a loan or even on a free transfer as his current deal at The Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and Rafa Benitez is thought to be keen on snapping the player up – although his wages could be an issue.

Newcastle will face competition for the player with fellow Premier League strugglers Fulham also believed to be interested in Valencia.

The Magpies are currently just two points off the relegation zone and are thought to be in the market for reinforcements.

The Verdict:

Valencia is a hugely experienced international and has represented both club and country at a number of the world’s biggest competitions.

However, whether Newcastle will be able to convince him to join them in a relegation battle at St. James’ Park remains to be seen, or if the club will be able to afford his huge wage demands.

Also, The Magpies arguably do not need another right-back in their squad, with the need to strengthen other positions surely a bigger priority.
