The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted by the performances of Jamaal Lascelles at the heart of their defensive unit this season.
Rafa Benitez’s side have managed to finally add goals to their game in the last few months and steer clear of a relegation battle after spending the majority of the season teetering above the relegation zone. They have struggled in the final-third for creativity and inspiration, but the back-four have been relatively solid for the entirety of the season, and Lascelles owes a great deal of credit for that.
The performances of Newcastle’s captain have been pivotal to the success they have enjoyed, and unsurprisingly his form has attracted interest from outside the club. According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Everton are planning to make a £25 million bid for Lascelles this summer in order to bolster their defensive options, despite the fact he signed a 6-year contract extension in October 2017.
Newcastle’s progress in recent months suggests that if they keep hold of Benitez and welcome a financially strong investor to takeover the club this summer then they will be able to establish themselves as a solid top-flight club, or even more. However, losing Lascelles to the Toffees could completely put an end to that dream and even lead to Newcastle’s relegation next season.
Lascelles (valued at £6.3 million by Transfermarkt) is the club’s best defender, their captain and presumably a strong influence in the dressing room, so he would be almost impossible to replace in the summer window. The good news for Newcastle is that the 24-year-old World Cup hopeful is unlikely to be convinced by the prospect of moving to Everton after the unstable season they have endured, especially considering how highly valued he is at St James’ Park.
However, in this day and age money talks, so Lascelles’ future is by no means guaranteed. Benitez will have plenty of important tasks to complete in the transfer market this summer, but none will carry the same weight of importance as the one to convince Lascelles to remain with the Magpies for at least another season.
