Newcastle would emulate Kenedy success by landing Chelsea’s 19-year-old award-winner on loan

The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pessimistic about the summer transfer window as talks drag on between Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley regarding the club’s transfer strategy.

The Magpies faithful propping up our bar simply cannot express the importance of keeping Rafa Benitez highly enough, but they are concerned that his personal issues with Ashley will eventually result in his departure. Discussion in the media over a potential takeover from Amanda Staveley has fizzled out in recent months, which suggests the British businesswoman has ended her interest in purchasing the club, so unless Ashley is able to quickly find a new buyer, it seems Newcastle could be set for yet another frustrating summer.

With that in mind, Benitez will need to be shrewd in the transfer market and consider making a handful of loan signings this summer. The success Kenedy enjoyed on Tyneside last season proved that the loan system is one worth exploiting to sign top quality players without having to spend huge sums of money, as the Brazilian installed a level of quality into Newcastle’s attacking play which inspired the players around him to discover their best form.

Considering the vast array of talent which Chelsea have produced from their academy in recent years, Benitez should return to Stamford Bridge and propose another loan deal this summer for the 19-year-old attacking midfielder Mason Mount. The England youth star recently returned from a glowing loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem in the Dutch Eredivisie where he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists from 40 appearances in all-competitions – a startling record for a player completing his first full season at senior level.

Mount usually operates in a central position behind the striker where he can utilise his intelligent inter-play, neat dribbling and ability to find the back of the net to great effect. Making the step up to the Premier League will undoubtedly represent a tough task for him next season, but it’s a challenge he should relish after finding his feet in Holland where he earned the player of the year award for Vitesse.

Chelsea have proven they lack a willingness to hand opportunities to young players in recent years, so on the premise that their approach will continue to persist next season, Newcastle would be foolish not to make a loan bid for Mount this summer.

With a whole season to impress at St James’ Park, Mount could eventually go on to become a true fan-favourite on Tyneside and even exceed the heights Kenedy reached during his short stint with the club, so Benitez should submit a loan bid for his services before a rival Premier League club beat them to the deal.
