Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be expecting their team to strengthen in the summer as they look to build on this year’s campaign.
Rafa Benitez managed to guide the Magpies away from the relegation zone during the second half of the season and is expected to make a number of changes during the transfer window to solidify their place in the Premier League.
However, according to reports in The Sun, the Spaniard could be set to let a number of his players depart, including Paul Woolston. The 19-year-old is out of contract at St. James’ Park this summer and Cardiff City are thought to be leading the race to land his signature.
The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will have mixed opinions about Woolston leaving the club, having been viewed as a promising talent who has already featured for England at youth levels.
However, a number of the locals will feel it is the right time to let the goalkeeper go, as they already have a large number of shot-stoppers on their books, with Rob Elliot, Matz Sels, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and even Martin Dubravka – a player who is expected to join on a permanent deal from Sparta Prague.
Benitez has praised the 19-year-old, having invited him to train with the senior side on a number of occasions, but it appears his future will be pursued away from the north-east.
