Newcastle supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are satisfied with their opening Premier League weekend, with Steve McClaren’s first game in charge at St James’ Park ending in a 2-2 draw with Southampton.
In an entertaining game, Papiss Cisse pulled the Toon Army level with a close range finish during the first half, and then after the game had to reject talk he could soon be on his way out of the club.
The Senegal international has earned himself cult hero status during his two-and-a-half year stay on Tyneside, but with Newcastle having spent big on Alexsander Mitrovic already this summer, and continuously being linked with QPR forward Charlie Austin, reports have suggested Cisse could be forced to make way.
But Cisse – who has 35 Premier League goals for the Magpies following yesterday’s strike – says he is focused on continuing to score goals in a black and white shirt.
He told Chronicle: Live “I have a contract at Newcastle United. I need to be professional every time I play. I don’t have a team to leave to.
“I am a Newcastle player. I try to work hard in every game I get.”
This news has pleased the resident Newcastle fans here in the Tavern, with them all feeling that the striker will be a key part of Steve McClaren’s team this season!
