The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are always fearful that their side’s volatility could rear its ugly head. Mike Ashley is a divisive man, and it’s fair to say that the club has had its fair share of problems under his ownership.
They look to be past the worst of them, but still, there’s a very real chance that things could kick off again this summer.
Indeed, given how important it is that Newcastle get off to a quick start on the transfer front, it’s fair to say that a few events this month could lead to it going down as somewhat of a nightmare for the club.
That, of course, is something to be avoided. The repercussions of a poor summer are huge, and so starting it poorly could lead to a tricky spiral.
But what would a nightmare June consist of?
Jamaal Lascelles Departs
Jamaal Lascelles is so important to this team, and so the prospect of losing him should terrify fans.
He’s been linked with switches to both Chelsea and Tottenham over the last week by the Evening Standard, and given each side’s financial power, that is worrying.
It would be nothing short of a disaster to lose Lascelles. He’s the sort of player that the club should build the team around.
Repeating 2017 Mistakes
Newcastle’s big problem last summer was that they were too slow.
They didn’t move quickly enough to bring in new faces, and even then, some of their transfers were disappointing.
They had some hits – notably in Kenedy – but the Magpies desperately need to move quickly and efficiently this summer.
If not, the very real prospect of relegation will crop up again.
Ashley and Benitez Problems
Problems between Mike Ashley and Rafael Benitez have been regular since the Spaniard moved to St James’ Park.
He’s clearly eager to improve the team, whilst Ashley’s purse strings have been pulled tighter than ever before.
The last thing that the club needs, then, is more division.
This, of course, goes far beyond merely repeating 2017 transfer mistakes. In this case, Benitez’s future could even be on the line.
