The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern were pretty pleased with how their side performed last season. After rolling the dice in the hope of an instant return to the Premier League the year prior, the Magpies looked comfortable in the English top flight – with most fans unconcerned at the prospect of relegation, given how unlikely it looked.
They went from strength to strength during the season, and it’s fair to say that fans are now expecting their position in the Premier League to be consolidated next term.
For that to be the case, though, the Magpies must ensure that they continue to improve – and much of the groundwork for that will need to be done this summer.
June, in particular, will be crucial, as it’s important that Newcastle make a quick start to proceedings.
But what would a perfect June look like for Newcastle?
Ashley Backs Benitez
Mike Ashley has often been hesitant to spend big in the transfer market, but it’s time he invests – and fast.
If Newcastle can make a quick start and sign a few players for big money, they could be on for something very special next season.
If he fails to move fast, they could simply fall down the table once again.
It’s a crucial few weeks on the transfer front.
Kenedy joined Newcastle with very little fanfare last season, but he was a real hit.
The Brazilian really proved to Chelsea that they made a mistake letting him go. Able to play in a number of positions, he was a real talisman for the Magpies.
Now, though, it’s important that he comes back to the club.
A permanent deal makes sense for Newcastle, and perhaps – if he’s not in Chelsea’s short or long-term plans – a sale could be agreed. It’s the sort of transfer that could define the season for the club.
As previously noted, Newcastle’s financial situation has been discussed at length – but that doesn’t mean that signings can’t be made.
On top of any permanent purchases, it’s important that Newcastle make use of the loan system.
They saw how beneficial that was with Kenedy. Now, given that they may have an open dialogue with the Blues, perhaps they could look to bring in another talented Chelsea youngster.
If not, there are dozens of other options out there to consider. The best players are likely to be snapped up quickly, so they must move fast.
