‘Next Ashley Cole’, ‘Absolute scenes’ – Newcastle United fans react to surprise player report

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the news that Gareth Southgate has been monitoring three players from St James Park for his England squad. Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey were disappointed to have missed out on call-ups to the 27 man squad for World Cup warm-up games against the Netherlands and Italy, but Paul Dummett is a surprise name that Southgate has also been looking at, according to The Chronicle

Despite having two international caps for Wales, Paul Dummett is still eligible to play for England as his two appearances came in friendly fixtures for The Dragons. The Newcastle academy graduate was contacted personally by Ryan Giggs as the Wales manager wanted to see Dummett in his first international squad, however, the left-back turned down the call-up, he previously stood down from international duty during Chris Coleman’s stint as Wales boss but never officially called time on his international career.

Now though, Dummett is faced with an entirely different prospect. Ryan Bertrand pulled out of the 27 man squad due to an injury, leaving just Ashley Young and Danny Rose as the Three Lions left-backs. Southgate has been looking at Dummett due to his steady form in the Northeast this season and his reliability and consistency may just have earned him a chance to go to the World Cup in Russia this summer.
