Rumours yesterday that Bayern Munich were in the hunt for Leighton Baines’ signature have developed today as it now looks as if Man Utd are involved too.
Reports suggest that Alex Ferguson, looking for a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra, has been impressed with Baines’ progress at Everton and Gareth Bale’s meteoric rise at Spurs. Evra, whose contract expires next summer, has been a revelation at Old Trafford and arguably could contend to being the best left back in the world. But if he goes, who will Fergie replace him with?
Both options would cost Sir Alex a fortune. Baines, just having signed a new 5 year contract and as an example of English talent would command a considerable fee, and Bale as probably the player of the season so far, could help Spurs cancel world debt if some opinions are to be believed, if they let him go.
Report coming out of Manchester suggest that both could be played in the same team, in what is a mouth-wateringly attacking prospect, and a left side that could cause any team problems. With Baines at left back and Bale left wing – emulating his boyhood hero, Ryan Giggs – Fergie could rejuvenate his side and create another legacy, and in doing so stave off the money spending threat of near-rivals Man City by staying true to his transfer principles and buying British.
But, at what price?
