You have to feel for certain sportsman despite their millions and celebrity girlfriends. Sometimes talented athletes careers run parallel to those who are simply better, those destined to be remember as the greatest of all time. Tyson Gay against Usain Bolt. Andy Roddick against Roger Federer. Cesc Fabregas against the Spanish midfield?
It must be galling for Fabregas to know that he would walk into any team in the world as the attacking fulcrum of their midfield but yet sits on the bench as though a lowly squad player for Spain. Any club team would take him, any nation naturalize him and yet Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta keep him away from the centre of the Spanish midfield. Strange then that the club by which they are also both employed is trying to sign the Arsenal captain.
Cesc Fabregas may not have had much game time at the World Cup but that does not necessarily diminish his value. Pep Guardiola and Barcelona seem insatiable in their desire to bring back the young Spaniard who, due to the difference in UK and Spanish employment law, they saw slip away at the age of 15. The tender yeared mulleted midfielder that arrived at Arsenal is now recognised as one of the most accomplished players in the modern game and Arsenal’s youngest captain for decades. He would be the final piece in the jigsaw to confirm Barca as the best team in the world by a considerable distance.
With his inclusion they would be a formidable attacking force largely of Spanish extraction. Given the manner that they destroyed teams with their flair, including Fabregas’ Arsenal, last year one could shudder to think what they will do with possible young Cesc and David Villa added to their line up.
It seems that they won’t stop until Fabregas comes home. £40 million pounds may be a price inflated by the emotional connection Barca have with the Gunners Skipper but those who witnessed him turn the World Cup final on it’s head and lay on the winning goal will call it a bargain.
