Norwich City centre-back Christoph Zimmermann could make his first appearance of the season in tonight’s League Cup clash away to Crawley Town.
Daniel Farke spoke on the issue arguing against and for potentially starting the German centre-half in tonight’s clash.
The manager argued that it could be too soon for the 26-year-old, however, did say that the defender trained with the rest of the squad ahead of the game (via Norwich City).
Zimmermann has been out since the start of July after having surgery on a knee injury (via Pink Un).
The defender enjoyed a fantastic season with the Canaries last season, helping the Norfolk side win promotion to the Premier League. The German made 40 appearances in the Championship last season, conceding 41 goals (via Transfermarkt).
Norwich’s performances without the defender speak volumes about how good Zimmermann is. Without the centre-back Norwich won none of their six Championship games, drawing three and losing three. Daniel Farke’s side also conceded 15 goals in those six games, a massive 37% of the 41 goals they conceded when Zimmermann was in the side (via Transfermarkt).
This season alone Norwich have already conceded eight goals in their three Premier League games, including a 4-1 loss away to Liverpool where Grant Hanley scored an own goal.
Digging deeper into the statistics of the Norwich defender, and it starts to paint a picture of Zimmermann’s importance to Farke.
The defender made the most interceptions, the second-most clearances and the second-most blocks of the centre-backs in Norwich’s squad last season (via WhoScored).
The former Borussia Dortmund player also showed his measured ability in defence, coming second when looking at centre-backs that were dribbled past per game last campaign (via WhoScored).
Zimmermann has shown his importance to Norwich’s backline, and his introduction can’t come soon enough. Conceding eight goals in the first three games of the season spells trouble for Farke’s side moving forward, and they could use the extra stability at the back.
