Daniel Farke is confident that money will be made available for the January transfer window to bolster Norwich City’s squad.
The Canaries brought in five senior faces into the squad this summer, opting to keep and play most of the squad who earned them promotion. The German manager, though, is hoping that more money will be available in January.
He said: “You can maybe survive for one year in the Premier League if you spend money but you can just as easy go down to League One. We wanted to invest in our academy and our infrastructure.”
“Hopefully (in January) it will be different. It is not like I am overly happy that we can’t spend more money. I would like to sign more quality players because I like to work with them but I totally buy into our philosophy.” (Source: Pink Un)
Norwich City’s outlay this summer has been very minimal, with the club signing three players on loan, one on a free transfer, and just one player for a small fee. Altogether the Norfolk side spent around £3.75m this summer, with fellow promoted teams Aston Villa and Sheffield United spending £133.74m and £42.75m respectively.
The lack of spending was very apparent last Friday, especially in the defence, where Norwich City really struggled in their Premier League opener. Most teams will concede when they go to Anfield and face Liverpool, with the Reds finishing last season as the second highest goalscorers in the Premier League (via WhoScored). But it was the manner of the defeat that really stood out.
Farke’s side conceded four goals in the first half, with Jurgen Klopp’s side managing to score all four from just six shots on goal. There is a clear lack of quality in the two back-up options to Christoph Zimmermann and Timm Klose, who both missed the opening game through injury.
Tom Trybull also struggled defensively committing three fouls and being dribbled past four times, as he was overrun in the middle of the park.
It’s clear to see that Norwich City need reinforcements in the centre of defence and midfield, and to hear Farke say funds could be available will surely be music to the ears of the Canaries faithful.
