Norwich City were narrowly defeated 3-2 by Frank Lampard’s Chelsea with one player showing their importance to the side ahead of a fight for Premier League safety.
Tammy Abraham opened the scoring in the third minute before Todd Cantwell scored his first-ever goal for the Norwich first-team.
Mason Mount then scored his second Premier League goal in as many games to put Chelsea back in the lead before Teemu Pukki struck home. However, Abraham popped up in 68th minute to win the game for Chelsea.
The game saw many good performances with Teemu Pukki continuing his imperious form in the top flight. The Finn has now scored five goals in the opening three Premier League games, making him the league’s joint-top scorer.
Tim Krul also showed his experience as he made five saves to keep out Chelsea. But, Ben Godfrey in the centre of defence had a storming game despite the conceding of three goals for the Canaries.
The young defender made the second-most interceptions, second-most clearances, and the joint-most blocks of any player in the Norwich City team, as he put in a vital performance to stop Chelsea from scoring more goals (via WhoScored).
The 21-year-old also came within a whisker of scoring for Norwich, smashing a header against the crossbar from an Emiliano Buendia corner in the second half.
The Pink Un agreed with this assessment of Godfrey, giving the young player a glowing review and an 8/10 rating following the game against Chelsea.
They said: “Thumping header against the post would have been a headline-grabber. One or two vital interceptions/blocks when Chelsea threatened.” (Source: The Pink Un)
Norwich have struggled to defend well since the start to life back in the Premier League, conceding 8 goals already. However, if Godfrey can replicate his form against Chelsea for the remainder of the season, he really could help address that.
