Norwich City have reignited their interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes, according to The Star.
According to the publication, Norwich City made a ‘cheeky’ bid to sign Rhodes on a free transfer, a bid that was rejected flat out by Sheffield Wednesday.
The report also said the club’s hierarchy was left incensed with the bid, with a source saying: “Norwich have shown no respect at all.”
Rhodes was on loan with the Norfolk side last season, having struggled at Sheffield Wednesday since joining the club in 2017.
Links with Rhodes would go against manager Daniel Farke’s comments about not wanting to add any more players to his squad ahead of the close of the transfer window.
Indeed, Rhodes has been less than prolific in the last three seasons having only scored 19 goals combined, nine last season, seven in the 2017/2018 season and just three in the 2016/2017 season. In stark contrast, the Scotland international managed 17 goals in the 2015/2016 season alone, showing just how far he has dropped off.
While increasing squad depth and competition for places is good in theory, there is little need for Norwich City to follow up their interest in Rhodes. The arrival of Josip Drmic already bolsters the striking ranks to compete with the imperious Teemu Pukki next season, as well as the fact Rhodes has only ever played 6 Premier League games and not scored.
In the past, even former Premier League managers such as Alan Pardew (during his time at Newcastle) suggested the player wasn’t good enough to compete amongst England’s elite.
As well as having too many options, Rhodes provides no versatility. If the Oldham-born Scotland international had the ability to play as a second striker or even as a winger, then signing him would make sense. However, throughout his career, Rhodes has only ever played in that striking role, according to Transfermarkt.
Frankly, Rhodes’ inability to play anywhere else and his drop in form in recent seasons, are all strong reasons why Farke should steer clear of adding the 29-year-old to his squad for next season.
