The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Mesut Ozil to stick around at the Emirates for a while longer. He’s been increasingly influential this season, having finally regained his form under Arsene Wenger, and with the Gunners looking to break back into the top four – they will need his quality.
According to the Sun, Mesut Ozil – along with Jack Wilshere – wants to play for Arsenal next season, with both players reportedly keen to sign new deals. In the case of Ozil, he is said to be ‘loving it’ at Arsenal – and with an offer on the table, it seems as though fresh terms could be agreed between all parties sooner, rather than later.
It will certainly come as a surprise to our resident Gunners to see Ozil stay beyond January, let alone seal a new deal. Given that his contract expires in six months, and the fact that there has been little news with regards to a new deal up until this point, most were preparing for his eventual departure.
However, now that doesn’t seem to be all that likely, with the German appearing to be keen to sign a new deal.
That will come as a huge boost for Arsene Wenger, in particular, as he looks to prepare for life after Alexis Sanchez – who looks set to quit the club.
Mesut Ozil has been an inconsistent player for Arsenal, but his retention is important on so many levels. First and foremost, he’s very talented and, of course, on his day he is unstoppable – but it’s far bigger than that. If he signs on, it will suggest that the Gunners are still an attractive option for big players, and him being there could be enough to convince other players to join the club in the future.
It would certainly be a statement from the club, and that’s just what they need given their recent struggles.
The sooner this is done, the better.
