Olivier Bernard has taken to Twitter to slate Sunderland and Newcastle fans are loving it

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to Olivier Bernard’s latest Twitter post. The defender, who was part of Bobby Robson’s Newcastle that finished 3rd, 4th and 5th and reached the UEFA Cup semi-final, posted a video on Twitter mocking Sunderland for their imminent relegation to League One after their awful season has left them in 23rd and seven points off of 21st placed Bolton.

The video is sure to rile up Sunderland fans just as much as it provides a laugh for the Newcastle fans. Bernard was Newcastle through and through, playing over 130 games for the club in his five-year spell for the club between 2000 and 2005. The Frenchman was a hit with the Magpies and is still loved and revered by the fans of the club. The left-back joined the club on a free transfer from Lyon in the summer 2000 and after a loan spell with Darlington, he returned to the club and became a fan favourite.

The recent dig at Sunderland is one that a number of fans have been making as their Tyne-Wear derby rivals face a double relegation after plummeting from the Premier League last season and now looking destined to be playing alongside Accrington Stanley and Luton Town, who are both set to be promoted from League Two this year. Whilst a club the size of Sunderland obviously looks out of place in England’s third tier, it’s been a fair reflection of the club’s performances since the start of last season.
