Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to get anxious at the lack of transfer activity at St. James Park.
Rafael Benitez guided the Magpies to a tenth-place finish in the Premier League, very respectable given the lack of investment from owner Mike Ashley. They cannot afford another summer with no money being injected into the playing squad. With a few key signings, Newcastle are on the cusp of challenging for Europe.
There is plenty of areas that need strengthening now the summer window is open. Our punters are desperate to see a top goalscorer arrive on Tyneside with Aleksander Mitrovic likely to sign a permanent deal with Fulham. The latest reports have linked the Magpies with a £16m move for West Brom’s Salomon Rondon.
Signing the Baggies forward would be a huge mistake. Instead, Newcastle should do everything in their power to lure Celta Vigo forward, Maximiliano Gomez, to the Premier League. The youngster has taken La Liga by storm, netting an impressive 18 goals in his breakthrough season as well as notching five assists. His performances have seen his market value skyrocket for £22.5m according to Transfermarkt.
Gomez is a typical number nine, a strong forward who likes to operate in the box and is strong in the air. The 21-year-old would fit perfectly into the 4-2-3-1 system often used by Benitez. He will travel to the World Cup for Uruguay and has been labelled the new Luis Suarez in the past.
If Newcastle secure his signature, he could follow in Suarez’s footsteps and be a massive hit in the Premier League.
Newcastle fans, thoughts?
