The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting a few players to leave the club this summer. After a number of years of disappointment, it’s clear that major changes are needed at the Emirates.
However, some players may be given a stay of execution. Whilst they may not bee sold quite yet, however, another poor year could see the axe swing their way.
That could well be the case for Alex Iwobi.
Iwobi has emerged over the last two years or so as an exciting young talent, but his progress under Arsene Wenger has been limited at best. He’s had moments of brilliance, and he’s now an established member of the Arsenal first team squad, but he’s certainly not one of the more popular players at the Emirates. He scored just 3 goals in the 2017/18 season, which is certainly below par.
When you consider that Arsenal have spent big on forwards as of late – given that the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed last season, in addition to Mesut Ozil a few years ago – it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Iwobi get lost in the shuffle.
At 22-years-old, the Nigerian is about to enter a crossroads in his career. He’ll be 23-years-old by the time next season rolls around, and a strong season could fire him into the stratosphere at Arsenal. However, a poor season could effectively bring his time at the Emirates to a close. It’s unlikely that Wenger’s successor will be as patient as Le Prof, and so it’s time for Iwobi to step up or step off.
