The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were furious with their side’s transfer business last summer. The Blues were defending their title, yet for much of the break, very little of note was happening at Stamford Bridge.
The players that were brought in have, for the most part, failed to adjust – with the likes of Alvaro Morata and Davide Zappacosta, in particular, drawing the ire of fans.
However, perhaps the player that has generated more anger than most is Tiemoue Bakayko, and it’s fair to say that next season should be make or break for him with regards to his Chelsea career. Whilst with Morata, in particular, Chelsea saw glimpses of genius, it was a very different tale for Bakayoko.
Despite impressing over in France with Monaco, the Frenchman has seriously struggled to adapt to the Premier League. Slow on the ball, lacking defensive quality and undoubtedly one of the worst midfielders in Antonio Conte’s arsenal, no player has disappointed more than him.
Next season, then, he either needs to step up or step out, and that’s particularly true given what Chelsea could get up to this summer. Their poor season this year should force Roman Abramovich to make a few big money signings, and so Bakayoko certainly could find himself lower down the pecking order.
Furthermore, there is also the prospect of a returning Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The pair share a lot of qualities, and Loftus-Cheek has done everything far better than his rival this season.
Next year, then, if Bakayoko doesn’t regain his form and impress, Chelsea could be looking at their next major transfer flop.
