The interest of the Everton supporters in turning Andre Gomes’ temporary deal into a permanent one is perhaps the worst kept secret at Goodison Park, but whether their dream will come true remains to be seen.
Pulling the strings in midfield with composure and class, Gomes has been a revelation since arriving from Barcelona.
He is effectively a perfect embodiment of everything Marco Silva is trying to achieve at Everton, so it is no wonder he has seamlessly settled into his new club and captured the imagination of the supporters.
There has been plenty of discussion regarding where Gomes’ long-term future lies, with a permanent deal clearly on the agenda for Everton.
But the Toffees may not get it all their own way in the transfer market; rival clubs will be watching on with keen interest from afar and they may find themselves in the midst of a bidding war in January or next summer.
With that being said, Marcel Brands will need to have a contingency plan in place to utilise in the event that Gomes does not join Everton on a permanent basis, and one player who should be firmly on his radar is Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, following a recent report from Liga Financial.
According to the report, Newcastle and West Ham are interested in signing the 22-year-old outcast, and the same report suggests that he has a release clause of £30 million.
Now, for a player like Loftus-Cheek, who is hugely talented and blessed with both Premier League and international experience, £30 million fee represents brilliant value.
Loftus-Cheek offers a slightly different skill set to that of Gomes: he is dynamic in his approach, powerful when moving forward with the ball and has a tendency to roam into wide positions.
But that should not deter Everton’s interest. Loftus-Cheek is a brilliant playmaker with the potential to blossom into a first-team regular in the England squad, and supporters would quickly forget about Gomes’ brilliance if Brands was willing to sanction a deal.
Everton’s Director of Football has thoroughly impressed with the transfer activity he has sanctioned since arriving at the club earlier in the year, but there is no guarantee he will be able to continue pleasing the supporters by signing Gomes.
If, for some unforeseen reason, Everton are unable to complete a permanent deal for Gomes, Brands should make Loftus-Cheek his number one priority.
