Opinion: Arsenal are on the brink of confirming a mouth-watering bargain transfer

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited by recent reports from The Guardian which claim their club have agreed a fee with Sampdoria for the transfer of Lucas Torreria, but reports from Germany suggest they are set to complete a deal which will blow Torreira out of the water.

The defensive midfield position has been a huge problem in recent years as the likes of Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin have all failed to convince on a consistent basis, and it appears Unai Emery is attempting to resolve the issue by completing the signing of 22-year-old Torreria.

The Uruguay international will undoubtedly be an excellent addition to the squad providing Arsenal don’t hit a snag in negotiations in the coming days, but if reports from German media outlet Bild prove to be true then Emery is set to complete one of the bargains, if not the bargain of the summer window.

According to the report, Arsenal are expected to announce the signing of Bernd Leno shortly for a fee between 20-25 million euros, which represents an absolute steal in the current economic climate.

Peter Cech has been struggling for form in recent years with Arsenal and it’s fair to say the club would be wise to replace him if they wish to compete at the summit of the Premier League next season.

Bringing Leno to the club in Cech’s place would represent a huge statement of intent for Arsenal in their bid to return to the top-four next season, as he possesses all of the attributes and experience which are needed to become a resounding success in North London at the age of just 26.

Considering his age, there’s no doubt that Leno still has plenty of scope for improvement in the Premier League where he will face a different challenge to the one he has faced in his career at Bayer Leverkusen.

Although Leno failed to make the German World Cup squad, it must be considered that the competition for places with Joachim Jowe’s 23-man-squad was incredibly strong and his omission is not a fair reflection on the extent of his ability.

In the years to come Leno would undoubtedly prove to be a bargain signing at just over £20 million, as his current ability and potential to improve suggest he could establish himself as a firm fan-favourite and write himself into the history books during a long and successful career in North-London.
