Arsenal had a problem last season. Well, they had quite a few problems to be honest, but it’s hard to argue that their main issue came between the sticks. Over the years, Arsenal have had more than a few issues trying to find a reliable goalkeeper, and in Petr Cech – who they signed from Chelsea in 2015 – they looked to finally have a solution.
However, cracks began to show last year in that the 36-year-old’s quality was reducing, and towards the end of last season, that crack became a gaping hole. Indeed, it’s fair to say that Cech’s lack of form cost them more than a few points last term, and so improvement was needed.
Fortunately, that has now come in the form of Bernd Leno, and it’s essential that the German is given a regular starting berth next season.
Leno is known as a goalkeeper that is very solid. Last term he looked good between the sticks, and over the last few years in particular, he’s earnt a reputation over in Germany as one of the most solid goalkeepers around.
Offering brilliant shot-stopping and a decent presence in the air especially from corners, the German ticks all the boxes for Arsenal. Furthermore, consistency is his strong suit, and that’s what Arsenal have lacked as of late.

Poor goalkeeping errors can often cost points every single season, and last season’s 12 point gap between Arsenal and 4th place could genuinely be reduced to nothing if Arsenal’s goalkeeper improves. Next season, then, it’s vital that Leno is a regular at the Emirates.
