The future of Dominic Solanke has been a peculiar topic of discussion at Anfield this season, and he continued to stake his claim for a first-team opportunity with a glowing performance for England's U21 side on Tuesday evening.

Those who have seen Solanke perform at youth level will be firmly aware of the enormity of his potential, so it's no surprise that his exile from Jurgen Klopp's first-team plans is evoking plenty of interest in the British media.

Jose Mourinho revealed that Solanke was up to the standard he would expect of a future Chelsea first-team star in 2015, but his career hasn't developed in the manner which many had expected and hoped it would.

Solanke's second goal last night showcased a level of flair which is seldom found in players who aren't capable of thriving at the top level, as he intentionally back-heeled the ball into the turf to raise the ball over the outstretched leg of the stranded goalkeeper.

It was a goal which took his tally to five goals in his last four appearances at international youth level, and that record will certainly be playing on Klopp's mind as he prepares to welcome his players back to Melwood ahead of their clash with Watford on Saturday afternoon.

Solanke will need to maintain patience as he waits for an opportunity, but with Daniel Sturridge's betting charge with the FA to consider and rumours linking Divock Origi away from the club continuing to circulate, it should only be a matter of time before he gets the nod.

Liverpool have become familiar with a system which sees Roberto Firmino spearheading the attack in something resembling a false-nine role, so Solanke could offer a genuine alternative with his more traditional approach to influence the game off the shoulder of the last defender.

The 21-year-old is knocking on Klopp's door following his recent international performances and he deserves his chance in the senior squad in light of his prolific return.
