Opinion: If Boateng joins Man Utd, Everton should consider a move for Chris Smalling

If reports from the Telegraph are to be believed, Man Utd want to land Jerome Boateng this summer. The German defender started just 19 league games last season, and with the Red Devils in need of more quality at the back, he’d certainly be a good fit.

Man Utd’s problem, though, has never been a case of a lack of depth. They’ve got a number of defenders that are able to fit in at centre-back, and they’ve done just that over the last few years.

However, Mourinho’s issue comes in a lack of world-class quality. The Red Devils want to be challenging for the title, and they can’t do that with players that aren’t suited to the current level that the club is at.

Perhaps, then, if Boateng were to join, Man Utd could look to sell a few of their other defenders, and this prospect should be interesting Everton.

The Toffees are a team on the up at the moment, but further defensive depth is needed, and perhaps the club could find it in the form of Chris Smalling, who is rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt.

Smalling has been at Man Utd since 2010, and you don’t stay at one of Europe’s best clubs for that long without having talent. Sure, he’s never going to win any awards for being one of Europe’s best, but for Everton, he could be just what they need. Relatively solid, if a little unspectacular, the Englishman provides solidity and quality at the back. He’s comfortable with the ball at his feet, which would suit Marco Silva’s style, and he also provides decent aerial prowess.

Significantly, with Everton looking to break into the top-six once again, the Toffees need someone with experience, and Smalling definitely has that. He’s got Premier League titles and domestic trophies in his locker, and that experience and knowledge of knowing how to win could be invaluable for Everton next season.

He’s not the sort of player that would change the game at Goodison Park, perhaps like Richarlison, and he’s never going to sell bucketloads of shirts, but signing someone like him could go under the radar, and it could prove to be one of the deals of the summer.

Whether Man Utd would sanction a move remains to be seen, but it’s a deal that makes sense for Everton. They need more quality central defenders, and Smalling would be a good fit.
