Tottenham Hotspur lost Reo Griffiths during the summer to Lyon in a gutting transfer setback, but they are aiming to replace their former academy product according to a recent report from France.
Reo Griffiths was widely touted as the next big thing; the answer to Tottenham’s second striker crisis; the next Harry Kane. But the hype which surrounded his development was cast into flames as he decided to join Lyon in the summer.
Spurs have since moved on and are now they are looking to bring a new talented young striker to the club, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
The report claims that Tottenham are interested in signing Toulouse wonderkid Adil Taoui, although they will face competition from Manchester City for his signature.
And both clubs are ready to take decisive action in the January window with offers in the region of 5 million euros (£4.5 million).
Now, it’s certainly too early to form concrete judgements about Taoui, but the fact he has already made the step up to reserve team football and found the back of the net, something which eluded Griffiths at Spurs, suggests he is a talent worth pursuing.
But convincing Taoui to move away from Toulouse at just 17-years-of-age could provide Spurs with an obstacle in their pursuit, so they may have to rely on an unlikely source to secure his signature.
That source is West Ham’s Issa Diop, a player who also rose through the ranks from Toulouse’s renowned academy system and into the senior squad.
Diop has made a compelling opening to life in English football and his no qualms approach to settling at the London Stadium suggests he is happy within his new environment.
As the most recent Toulouse player to make the switch to a London-based club, Diop could act as some form of mentor or guide for Taoui, offering advice on if and when to make the move, and also providing him with a notable contact if he ultimately decides to move to north London.
West Ham and Tottenham may be fierce rivals but the Toulouse connection between Diop and Taoui is a factor which could come into play later in negotiations.
Manchester City’s interest could yet derail Mauricio Pochettino’s transfer plan, but with Diop in London he might just be able to swing the teenager’s decision in Tottenham’s favour.
