Opinion: Landing £58.5m-rated ace would give Tottenham the firepower needed to win the title

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted at reports in the Daily Mail suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino is eager to land Anthony Martial. A move, it is said, won’t be easy, but with £100 million-plus to spend this summer, it’s fair to say that Pochettino has his eyes set on some big prizes.

Undoubtedly, a move for Martial – who is rated at £58.5 million by Transfer Markt – would be a huge deal for Spurs – and it could even give them the firepower needed to really take the next step in England.

After all, there isn’t really anyone like Martial at the club. They’ve got lots of incredibly technically gifted players, but nobody that can truly terrorize a defence with pace and dribbling quality. Erik Lamela hasn’t been at his best in a while, whereas Martial has enjoyed a fantastic year or so of form in difficult circumstances.

He picked up 9 goals last season, alongside 5 assists, and it’s likely that he would improve even further in a team that he is more highly valued, not to mention one that places more emphasis on the attack.

Tottenham are, it could be argued, slightly one dimensional going forward – often relying on fantastic passes to unleash Hary Kane. Martial would give them something different, not only in that he would give them a more direct attacker, but he’d also be able to pop up with goals. That, alongside Dele Alli in particular, could transform the Tottenham attack.

At present, Tottenham are inches away from finally winning the big one. They’ve improved drastically under Mauricio Pochettino and a few minor changes could be the difference and fire them up the table even more. Martial would reinvigorate the attack, and he could be just the ticket.
