The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed by their club’s failure to secure the signature of Nabil Fekir in the transfer window, but there is plenty of reason to suggest that Jurgen Klopp would be wise to focus on alternative targets in the coming weeks.
The Fekir saga has dragged on at Liverpool in recent weeks and is showing no sign of ending just yet despite recent reports which claimed he will not be moving to Merseyside this summer. Liverpool are in need of at least one attacking midfield acquisition to supplement the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, but Fekir’s preference for playing in a number ten role suggests he is not an ideal target to pursue, despite his obvious talent.
With that in mind, Klopp should target a player who is more naturally suited to playing in a wide attacking role, namely Hirving Lozano, Mexico’s World Cup star. The 22-year-old attacker – commonly known as ‘Chucky’ – was in electric form for the Mexicans on Sunday afternoon and scored an emphatic first-half winner to give his nation a shock victory over the current holders.
Naturally, it would be foolish to target a player solely on the basis of one impressive performance – especially at an international tournament – however, his form at club level last season suggests his masterclass display was representative of his true potential. Whilst playing for PSV Eindhoven last season, Lozano bagged 17 goals and provided 11 assists from 29 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie – a phenomenal record considering it was his debut season in European football.
The standard of the Dutch first tier is clearly a huge step down from the Premier League, but the manner in which he has excelled proves he is a class above and ready for the step up next season. Lozano’s ability to play on either wing and in a number ten role is a crucial factor which Klopp should take into strong consideration, as his versatility could make him a huge asset for Liverpool throughout the course of the season.
Time will tell if Lozano (valued at £22.5 million by transfermarkt) can match the standard he set against Germany on a consistent basis throughout the World Cup, but Liverpool should keep a close eye on his development and make a bid for his services if he continues to impress on the international stage.
