It’s no secret that Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new midfield lynchpin but who exactly Daniel Levy will bring into the club remains distinctly unclear.
Transfer rumours are beginning to snowball with the opening of the January transfer window looming on the horizon, and Tottenham’s hunt for a new midfielder is forming a key part of that discussion.
Indeed, according to the Daily Telegraph, Daniel Levy is interested in rivalling Everton for Andre Gomes’ signature in 2019, although the report suggests a potential transfer won’t take place until the summer.
Everton may well prove to be Tottenham’s biggest obstacle to Gomes’ signature, with his eye catching start to life on Merseyside suggesting that he is relaxed and enjoying his football within his new environment.
Considering Gomes’ failure to break into Barcelona’s first-team and his struggle with mental health problems in Catalonia, it’s plausible to suggest that he will be wary of rocking the boat now that he has found a club where he is respected, admired and valued.
If Everton do indeed win the race for his signature, Levy will need to turn his attention towards alternative targets, and one player who should be firmly on his radar is Cagliari prodigy Nicolo Barella.
Barella is lighting up Serie A on a weekly basis in the centre of Cagliari’s midfield, and his recent performances on the international stage suggest he could blossom into a better player than his compatriot Jorginho.
The deep-lying playmaker arrived at Chelsea in the summer and he has instantly made an impact at Stamford Bridge, impressing with his incisive passing and ability to influence the game from deep.
But Tottenham could go one better than their London-rivals with a stunning deal to sign Barella – a player who has been labelled ‘one of the best in Italy’ by no other than Andrea Pirlo (as per BBC).
In terms of esteemed praise that is about as good as it gets for an aspiring Italian midfielder, and Pirlo’s words of wisdom should be playing on Levy’s mind in the transfer market.
Barella is the type of player who can be found breaking up play on the edge of the area before bursting forward with the ball at his feet; he is a prime example of a complete box-to-box midfielder, and his breadth of attributes would certainly give Tottenham an extra dimension in midfield.
Tottenham’s interest in Gomes is certainly well-placed, but an alternative deal for Barella would be an exceptional piece of business.
