Discussion over PSG's interest in Everton's Idrissa Gueye has dominated the January transfer window, but developments in France on Tuesday hinted that the midfield anchor will remain at Goodison Park.

The midfield anchor role is a specialist position which is incredibly difficult to master. Gueye is one of the best in the division in a holding role and arguably the best outside of the top-six, so it has been of little surprise to see him heavily linked with one of Europe's top clubs this month.

Naturally, Marco Silva and the supporters are desperate to see Gueye remain on Merseyside, but the lure of the French giants cannot be underestimated.

However, PSG have now confirmed the signing of Zenit St. Petersburg's Leandro Paredes in a deal worth €40 million euros (£34.7 million).

Pertinently, the incredibly promising 24-year-old is a holding midfielder with a forward-thinking edge, thus filling the midfield void which Thomas Tuchel had been looking to fill this month.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Manchester City and Arsenal have also joined the race for his signature, but it's incredibly unlikely that either side will submit a formal offer this month: Unai Emery has publicly revealed that Arsenal have no money to spend, while Pep Guardiola will not view a 29-year-old as a long-term solution to the Fernandinho conundrum.

With that said, it seems that Everton could well be in the clear in regards to Gueye's future. A move to a fellow Premier League club is incredibly unlikely to say the least, and the strongest contender to secure his signature appear to have ruled themselves out with the signing of Paredes.

PSG are currently wary of Financial Fair Play restrictions and are unlikely to have anything left to spend this month following the arrival of Paredes.

Following weeks of intense speculation regarding Gueye's future, it appears that the Senegal international is set to stay at the club.
