Opinion: Reported Man Utd transfer decision is one of their worst since Sir Alex Ferguson left

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned at their side’s apparent decision regarding Danny Rose. According to the Telegraph, the Red Devils have pulled the plug on a deal for the Englishman – with Jose Mourinho feeling that the trio of Diogo Dalot, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw should have enough to man the spot over the next year.

It’s certainly a big call from the Portuguese, but there’s an argument to be made to suggest that it’s a poor decision – and it could even go down as one of their worst in a very long time.

After all, whilst Mourinho clearly has options, it’s hard to see any of them as a good fit. Diogo Dalot is typically best used on the right, and so he’d be a bit of a square peg in a round hole. Luke Shaw, meanwhile, hasn’t been at his best for a while, and it’s clear that Jose Mourinho doesn’t seem to rate him. Ashley Young, to be fair, had had a good year – but at 32-years-old, is he really a player that can be relied upon all year long?

In a Jose Mourinho team, the left-back spot is crucial. It offers key defensive quality, but it also provides the width to his teams, and so it’s important that the best possible player is in there. Rose, without a doubt, would have been a great fit.

Over the last few years, there’s arguably been nobody better than him in the Premier League. Offering excellent pace, dribbling and crossing going forward, combined with solid defensive play and a consistent performance level – Rose is truly a perfect fit.

Man Utd need improvements in other areas, but there was a perfect chance to secure a huge upgrade here. Mourinho’s latest decision, though, is undoubtedly a bad one.
