After a fantastic start to the season, Tottenham clearly need to have a think about where it’s all gone wrong. Despite impressing so much in August, it has been a very tough September for Spurs, with losses coming against Watford, Man Utd and Inter Milan. It’s been far from the perfect few weeks, and to make matters worse, a handful of players are underperforming.
The headlines will always lead to Harry Kane, whose often sensational form has made him Europe’s deadliest marksman, but the reality is that Kane is just one of a few players that need to up their game. Not to mention, given his age, the Englishman still has time on his side.
However, the same cannot be said for Mousa Dembele, who in recent weeks has been Tottenham’s worst player. In fact, he’s been so poor that Mauricio Pochettino seriously needs to consider his future.
Over the summer, it wouldn’t have been a surprise to see Dembele replaced in this team, with the Belgian already 31-years-old. However, that wasn’t really based on his performances, which were at that point still quite good.
That’s changed this season, with poor performances now becoming more and more frequent. His characteristic passing and strength have been replaced by a lack of accuracy with the ball at his feet and a sense of carelessness in the midfield, and that’s caused Tottenham more than a few problems. He’s no longer a player that can be relied upon, and when you consider the effortless guile that he used to utilise as she glided around the field in years prior, his influence in games has reduced exponentially.
At 31-years-old, it’s unlikely that he’ll be getting better any time soon, and with no sign of improvement, maybe it’s time for Pochettino to start phasing him out.
