Maurizio Sarri has made a good start at Chelsea so far, and his starting eleven seems to be fairly locked in. The Blues began with the same team against both Huddersfield and Newcastle, and barring one or two changes, you’d expect that to be his core squad for the next few weeks at least.
Naturally, though, that has meant that a handful of players are yet to be given a chance from the beginning of the game so far, and that’s something that needs to change against Newcastle. The game is a prime opportunity for Sarrri to give a chance to one or two players with a point to prove, and young Ruben Loftus-Cheek certainly deserves a chance.
The Englishman did all he could last season and during the summer with England at the World Cup to be deserving of a chance, and a role this weekend makes sense. He looked good against Huddersfield on the opening day when he came off the bench, and having had another two weeks of training, the Englishman could be in an even better position to make an impact.
Fortunately for him, there is a role for him in this squad. Mateo Kovacic doesn’t seem quite ready for a start, leaving Loftus-Cheek to compete with Ross Barkley. Barkley has started both games for Chelsea, but it’s tough to say that he’s particularly impressed. He hasn’t made much of an impact going forward, with 0 goals and 0 assists, and so his spot in the team is far from locked down. His injury record and lack of availability last season also does him very few favours.
Loftus-Cheek is a very talented player, and he’s more than ready to get a chance in the Chelsea first team. He’d offer tremendous pace and energy through the heart of the midfield, and that could terrorise a Newcastle team that has looked average at best so far this year.
A good performance could put him in a great position to really stake a claim for the rest of the season.
