Tottenham Hotspur prepare to face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium tomorrow evening in a fixture which is tantalisingly difficult to predict.
Spurs are certainly in better form but Leicester have an array of attacking talent who are capable of penetrating some of the league’s most sturdy defensive units.
Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have largely been attributed with the lions share of the credit for Leicester’s attacking prowess in recent years, but the Algerian’s departure has paved the way for a new star, James Maddison.
Signed for a fee of just £22 million in the summer, Maddison has been one of the most eye catching playmakers in the division this season, and the speed at which he has settled into his new surroundings has been remarkable.
Speaking ahead of the game, The Guardian journalist, Paul Doyle claimed that Spurs should have expressed their interest in James Maddison rather than Jack Grealish during the summer, before labelling him as one of ‘the signings of the season.’
When you take into consideration Maddison’s exceptional form, his age and his price-tag it becomes almost impossible to disagree with Doyle’s bold claim, and the new King Power hero deserves all the acclaim he is getting right now.
That Leicester were able to secure Maddison’s signature without facing particularly strong competition from some of the Premier League’s big-hitters is peculiar.
Perhaps Maddison decided that it was too soon for a move to a top-six club, or perhaps the top-six clubs simply missed a trick.
Either way there’s no doubt that Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino will be looking back on their pursuit of Grealish and questioning why they didn’t look towards East Anglia for their next number ten.
And Maddison could yet intensify any lingering feelings of regret with a match-winning performance this evening.
