The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are pretty much delighted with how the season has gone. Indeed, while there has been the usual off the field issues, the punters propping up our bar have been pleased to see Rafa Benitez ensure a top ten finish, despite a significant lack of investment.
If the Magpies are to compete for the European places next season, serious money needs to be thrown at the playing squad is needed. Owner Mike Ashley must back Benitez in the transfer market if the club is to return to the top of the Premier League. Signing a top striker should be high on the agenda.
One man who could fire them to Europe is Chelsea forward – Michy Batshuayi. The 24-year-old has been out-of-favour at Stamford Bridge since making a £35m move from Marseille two years ago. He is now valued at £36m by Transfermarkt and would surely achieve cult-hero status on Tyneside.
The Toon Army love a striker and the Belgian is quite the character (as well as a prolific marksman), despite having little chance to show it on the pitch in SW6.
Instead of sitting on the bench, he moved to Borussia Dortmund on loan in January where his form has been magnificent. Seven goals in just ten Bundesliga appearances highlight Batshuayi’s evident quality. The Belgian international would be a superb capture for Newcastle if they could beat Dortmund to his signature.
Still only 24, his best years are ahead of him, and he will be eager to prove Chelsea wrong for not allowing him to stake a claim at Stamford Bridge. The Blues would surely demand a hefty fee for his services, but if Newcastle are serious about their European ambitions, they should fork out on what would be a massive signing for Benitez’s side.
