West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern can only hope that their side can improve on what has been a dreadful 2017/18 campaign.
Slaven Bilic was dismissed as manager back in October following a string of poor performances which put the Hammers in a relegation battle. David Moyes took over and successfully guided to the club to safety. Despite securing their Premier League status, the Scot’s contract has now expired, and a new manager is expected to be appointed.
Whoever it is, the new manager must be backed in the transfer market if the Hammers are to avoid another relegation dogfight next season. Indeed, the defence must be an area of concern for Moyes’ successor. To solve their problem, they could lean on Pablo Zabaleta to attempt to lure Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala to the club.
Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the French defender has just one year remaining on his contract, and the Citizens will be keen to cut their losses after failing to impress since his £32m move from Porto. Despite his struggles in England, a fresh start at the London Stadium could be just what he needs to return to his best.
Still only 27-years-old, there is plenty of time for Mangala to turn things around. If he can stay injury free and get a consistent run of games under his belt, he could develop into a key player for the Hammers. It’s a risky move but a risk worth taking.
